ABMUN 2015

Armed with their Macs and dressed in their designer outfits – borrowed from their parents’ wardrobe – the future policy makers and diplomats of the 21st century swaggered into the World Trade Centre, Mumbai on 28th August, 2015, to discuss and debate the pet topic of every beauty pageant winner: world peace. Although none walked away with the crown, some walked away with commendation and all walked away with the supreme experience of participating in the ABMUN – the Aditya Birla Model United Nations.

170 students from five top-notch schools in Mumbai congregated for the three day event which was organised and executed primarily by students of Aditya Birla World Academy, with minimal teacher support. Helmed by our very own Ban Ki Moon, Secretary General ,  Anshuman Loyalka, his tower of strength: Deputy General Secretary, Anantveer Kanodia; and their loyal gang of ‘Chairs’: Chair and Co-chair  of the General Assembly: Arsh Malhotra  and Diya Kuwelkar, Chair and Co-chair of the Security Council; Shoumik Choudhury and Simoni Shah; Chair and Co-chair of  the Ad Hoc ;Aditya Dadia and Hiya Sanghvi, Chair and Co-chair  of the Anti- Terrorism Cell, Shanay Shroff and Pritika Nayak ; Heads of the Press: Aashna Shah and Riddhi Badheka; Heads  of the Organising Committee:  Rhea Poddar and Kevin Gandhi .This is the first year that the ABMUN opened its  doors to other schools.

The ABMUN drew delegates from Campion School, Cooperage; Villa Teresa School, Peddar Road; Singapore International School, Dahisar and NSS Hillspring, Tardeo.  They came, they spoke, and rated the event as success. Their points of praise ranged from the cuteness of the Secretary General and his Deputy to the impeccable organisation of the event and the terrific topic and emergencies, the team came up with.  The  topic discussed by the UNSC was security issues; ATC decimated terrorism; Ad Hoc debated the crises in Crimea, and the General Assembly tried to decipher the Greek Bailout. The best orators were awarded for their skills of debate and drama with certificates and shout-outs.

The award ceremony was held at the end of the third day, Sunday, 30th August 2015. It was attended by staff and students. Chairwoman of Aditya Birla World Academy, Mrs Neerja Birla and our Principal Mrs Radhika Sinha felicitated the award winners.

A special mention needs to be made of the Logistics team who worked silently and consistently to make sure every chit was passed, every delegate got their glass of water, every deserving delegate got their Cadbury Éclair toffee, and every erring delegate was escorted out.

It was the concerted efforts of the ABMUN committee: students and teachers which made the event a resounding success.
