Daan Utsav - The Joy of Giving

Winston Churchill had once said: "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give." It seems that the students of Aditya Birla World Academy have been inspired by these lines. For they have embarked on a series of activities to help the underprivileged.

The students of Grade 1 were happy to participate in 'Daan Utsav' (earlier called The Joy of Giving Week). The main aim of this event was to spread love, joy and happiness among those who are less fortunate than us and for each one of us to experience the joy in giving.

The event was held from 2nd to 8th of October 2016. The objective of this activity was to have our little ones experience the happiness of helping others. Hearts were touched and children had a wonderful experience while doing their bit for the society. Children were explained, giving could be in any format. For some it could be money while for others it could be time. Some people find great pleasures in giving care and working for others or for the society. The Joy of giving can be seen on the faces of people who share and give. The smile, the glow, the happiness, all is very much evident and it is a pleasure to see those faces. Basically, giving means ensuring that you are making someone happy by providing them what they wanted and thereby making them feel happy and cared for. To begin with, all the students were given a talk about Daan Utsav (joy of giving) and its importance like any other festival. Some ideas on what the children could do were shared with them. They were shown a visual song video as well as a video of the boy giving an ice-cream treat to some children playing in his neighborhood, followed by making posters related to joy of giving.

Every child of Grade 1 was a part this community service project. Students demonstrated a fervent interest while conducting these activities. Some of them donated rice and pulses, provided tea and snacks to the security guards. Another student visited an orphanage and distributed biscuits and gifts to the children there. All the students participated enthusiastically and came back feeling elated about their acts. On Monday, 10th of October the students wrote a reflection on their activity. While sharing their reflection, some students expressed their feeling of concern for their house helpers and security guards. However, through this project the students realized that the true sense of happiness lies in the service to others. They learnt that their lives are richer when they share, and that great joy comes from helping others to better their lives.

Our Principal, Ms. Radhika Sinha also believes it is important to teach children to make a contribution to other people's lives. It is only when we give of ourselves do we receive happiness that is unparalleled. Let us all spread joy and cheer so that the future generation to come would also find happiness and peace.
