Grade 1 Community Service

The students of Grade 1 were pleased to participate in the ‘DaanUtsav’ (earlier called The Joy of Giving Week) held by Times NIE. The main aim of this event was to spread love, joy and happiness among those who are less fortunate than us and for each one of us to experience the joy in giving.

The event was held from 2nd to 8th of October 2015. The objective of this activity was to introduce the little ones to help the society by performing a small act of giving. To begin with, all the students were given a talk about various ways in which they could do their bit for the society. Some ideas on what the children could do were shared with them. For e.g. treating their driver, cook or domestic helpers to a movie; treating a street kid to an ice cream, do the washing up after dinner etc.

These activities were to be conducted by each child. Students demonstrated a fervent interest for their Community Service project. Some of them helped their domestic staff by washing the dishes. One of the students invited all the security guards of the society and served them tea with the help of his mother. Another student taught her maid to speak English. Some students visited an orphanage and distributed gifts and biscuits to the children there. All the students participated enthusiastically and came back feeling elated about their acts. On Thursday, 8th of October the students wrote a reflection about their activity. While sharing their reflection, some students expressed their feeling of sorrow for their house helpers and security guards. However, through this project the students realized that the true sense of happiness lies in the service to others. They learnt that their lives are richer when they share, and that great joy comes from helping others to better their lives.
