Importance of physical education. What is the role of international schools in physical education?

We all want our children to do well in their studies and their lives, we also know how being physically active can help them indirectly in their studies. But do we really understand this? Do we really give physical education that importance? How much and how often do we encourage our children to be physically fit and active?

At Aditya Birla World Academy , we truly believe that Physical Education (PE) develops students’ competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities that become a pivotal part of the life of student, both in house and school. Physical exercises and activities boost stamina, which can increase confidence, motivation, academic achievement, and self-esteem . Hence, we aim to equip our students with the necessary knowledge around physical education and sports. We encourage our students to maintain a good balance between their academics and physical activities.

Time and again it has been scientifically proven, how Physical activities and sports stimulate the brain and make it more alert and students focus and their concentration gets better. Being physically active also makes the students energetic and strong, which can help motivate them to take interest in classroom activities. Students who take part in physical activities and exercise regularly have exhausted and tired body that craves for a good sleep in the night. A good night’s sleep makes students more attentive during classes.

Through physical education students are taught about diet and nutrition, Children these days are exposes to a lot of junk food labelled as healthy, through physical education they are taught how to identify healthy food and the role of food in children’s growth and development.

Being physically active also plays a huge role in relieving stress and anxiety. We all agree that these days with the pandemic around students spend most of their time in from of their computers/laptops/Tablets/mobile phones. This causes a lot of stress to the eyes and brains. In our physical education classes students are also shown exercises to relieve stress on the eyes and brains.

At Aditya Birla World Academy, in line with our vision of holistic development of our students we try to introduce a range of physical exercises and sports to provide the students a variety of sports activities, thus keeping them engaged in sports and Physical exercises. In our curriculum for lower grades we introduce them to various physical activities using props smiley balls, balloons, hoola hoops, agility cones etc. while at the higher grades we use skipping ropes, agility rings, Thera bands etc. Exercises are merged creatively with various fun activities like rock paper and scissors, 7 Up & 7 Down, Dice games, Housie, Deal or no Deal etc. to keep our students active and engaged. They are also encouraged to come up with their own games that could be conducted online and the entire class can participate.

Our aim with the lower grades is to work on their balance and coordination, mobility and loco motor skills and with the higher grades we work on their agility and strength. Students are taught a range of exercises and have to take time out during the week to repeat the same at their convenience. Since we have been online we have also introduced monthly fitness challenges where students can demonstrate how fit they are. Our most important aim through physical activities is to educate the students to make healthy choices and make physical activities a lifestyle and not just a mere subject in school.

Who would have thought that we would ever be conducting Physical education classes online! But here we are and well adapted to the situation conducting Physical education classes online and proving that we are undoubtedly the Best IB School, where our students are priority and equal importance given to their physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. The education system keeps evolving and we are extremely proud the way we keep adapting and excelling in what we do at Aditya Birla World Academy.
